Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

AKA: My big-ass long post about my Year Zero inspirations.

The biggest inspiration I have had for this was where I got the inspiration to write the original "Survivalism" one-shot. And that was the actual Survivalism music video.
Long story short, there's a few clips of boysex. I made them Davey and Jade and told the story of the music video from their POV.

In a similar strain of inspiration is the YA novel, Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow. The arrest scene in "Survivalism" was -- subconsciously at the time -- influenced by the one in here. Read it. It's hella amazing and you can download it -- legally -- for free at this link.

The album Year Zero itself once I started writing the full fic and not just "Survivalism" and a couple of prequels.

The Year Zero ARG. Especially...
exterminal.net (water poisoning, some of the way people are treated, etc)
artisresistance.com
iamtryingtobelieve.com (the site that Nils sent Davey to in Hyperpower! as well as Parepin vs non-Parepin behavior, and Opal = Parepin)
gracetheteacher.com (very, very sad but helped me with my Parepin vs non-Parepin emotional states)
thepriceoftreason.com (punishments, other stories)
cedocore.com (Prozira!!, more on Parepin, a bit on Opal = Parepin)
[big thank you to NINWiki for keeping this organized!)

Bits and pieces of other Nine Inch Nails albums and songs, in particular...
Most of The Slip
"The Hand That Feeds" from [With_Teeth]
"March of the Pigs' from The Downward Spiral
"The Fragile" & "Into the Void" from The Fragile (major in creating Davey's character)

My friend, Losty, actually. When we put out heads together, we created some insane Presence-related conspiracies which have the potential to show up in Year Zero.

The Maximum Ride books, to a minor extent. Mainly the surveillance.

Green Day. "Viva La Gloria!" is one of the songs I listened to while working on chapter 16 (heh). Between 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot (and "Minority!") there is quite a bit of Green Day on my "Year Zero Fic Mix." (oh yes, either Davey or Jade was in the class of '13 XD...Davey, I think).

Individual Songs:
-- The Matchbox 20 song "How Far We've Come." It's about the end of the world. Exactly.
-- "Testify" by Rage Against the Machine
-- "Vertigo," U2
-- Interestingly enough, "Alice of Human Sacrifice" by Vocaloid. The Red Alice is a lot like Trent, it seems, and the Blue Alice reminds me of Davey.

I have a feeling that another scifi book I'm reading, The Tomorrow Code by Brian Falkner, will have an effect on this.

Do You Remember the First Time?

http://msself-destruct.deviantart.com/gallery/#Survivalism-First-Draft
that gallery is all pictures taken of the six pages of the original draft of Survivalism...
You can see all my crossing-outs and errors and stuff. XD
It's true that all first drafts are crap!
You may be able to read it. If you can get it big enough & if you can decipher my handwriting.

I AM Working On It!

my

Proof that I'm working on Year Zero:
a lovely B&W pic of the hand-written last paragraph of the last chapter, secured into my notebook with red duct tape.
And next, you see the handwritten form of a chunk of chapter four. :-)

Survivalism, The Good Soldier, In This Twilight, & A Slip: A Year Zero Post.

So.
I've been working on Year Zero quite a bit lately (I'm considering hiatusing How Did You Think We'd Get By Without You?). And so here's a few things I've been up to in the world of writing.

Extended Survivalism (which will be YZ chapter three)
I've gotten one main criticism on Survivalism, on how it feels rushed. Truly, out of my three completed YZ chapters, it is the second-shortest (Hyperpower! is the shortest, at between 500-800 words, but that was to make a point. and it has Nils). So when I finally put up Year Zero, chapter three will not be the Survivalism we all know and love.
It will be the epic EXTENDED version of Survivalism!
Think of the current Survivalism one-shot as...the radio edit of a single. That works.
Y'know "MY HEART MY HEART MY HEART IS EMPTY TOO! WOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"

The Good Soldier (YZ chapter four)
I'm working on it. I started writing it last night. I assure you, it's gonna be epic.

In This Twilight/Zero-Sum (YZ chapters 15&16)
I'm actually writing these already. Zero-Sum is In This Twilight from Davey's POV, basically, but it's there to show a contrast. I left it open at the end for the Sequel which will happen when Trent releases YZ2. But it's also a good close if that never happens. So yay.

A Slip
Basically, the two months between Beginning of the End & Survivalism focusing on One Character, with a Hundam subplot. Totally set to The Slip by NIN.

Well, I'm here to kick ass and chew gum, and I'm all out of gum, so I'm gonna kick some writing ass now. Cya.
